SS Great Britain wedding - Laura & Alex

ss great britain wedding photography

As a recommended SS Great Britain wedding photographer, I photograph weddings at this venue on a regular basis. Launched in 1843 as the world’s first luxury ocean liner, the SS Great Britain is a truly unique venue for wedding ceremonies and receptions. This unique wedding venue is also the first wedding venue in Bristol where couple could get married outside the Bristol register office.

Laura and Alex didn’t only have perfect weather for their wedding at SS Great Britain; they had an incredibly unique day all together. It was a spring wedding with summer weather. A dream wedding on board one of the world’s greatest historic ships, creating memories to cherish and last a lifetime.

The bride with her bridesmaids got ready at her parents’ house near Bristol. Her hair was made by Broad St. weddings, her make-up done by Kathryn from Powder & Paint. Abigail Westrup Bridal handled the Dress alteration while the bride’s gorgeous head piece called Maui was handmade by Abigail Grace design. On the other hand, the groom with his groomsmen arrived at SS Great Britain in style by ferry from the city center.

The ceremony was lovely and I especially loved the unique flowers supplied by Emma Petersson. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed the sunshine on the weather deck where drinks reception was held. It was lovely to have a quick chat with parents of one of my brides whose wedding I photographed few years back, it turned out that there are bride's parents friends.

The speeches were downright hilarious! Right after the speeches, we manages to catch the last rays of Sun and took some portraits just before the sunset. The wedding at SS Great Britain wouldn't be completed without some evening portraits as the ship looks incredible at night. After that, it was back to the party to spend time with friends and family to celebrate the happiest day of their lives. The Jacks through Warble Entertainments serenaded the guests with good music

"Dear Martin, thank you so much for amazing pictures you took on our wedding day. We are so grateful to you-the day goes by in such a blur, but we have a fantastic set of picture memories. You captured key parts throughout the whole day and we are so pleased. We will be singing your praises to anyone and everyone. Thank you Laura & Alex"

Wedding at SS Great Britain - Tina & Shaun

Tina and Shaun didn't only have perfect weather for their wedding at SS Great Britain; they had an incredibly unique day all together. Married in July, the couple were wed during the annual Bristol Harbour Festival aboard the beautiful SS Great Britain. In order to get to the Great Britain, both the bride and groom took a smaller boat to it, waved on by the many people who were out enjoying the day of sun.

Dressed in a vintage dress that was over one hundred years old by very talented Cara from Cocoa Couture. Tina was played in by a bagpiper during her arrival to the ship where her groom and all of their guests were waiting for the ceremony to begin. The bridesmaids, wearing a beautiful shade of dark blue dresses and carrying bright orange flowers, led the bride to the altar to meet her groom.

After their first kiss as husband and wife, the pair took to the deck to have their photos taken. Shaun's son, who works on the SS Great Britain acting as the man who invented the ship, Mr. Brunel, provided everyone with Brunel hats and sideburns to take photos with, offering some great and hilarious opportunities with both the bridal party and the guests.

The reception room look amazing and I especially loved unique stationery which was designed by very talented Sarah from It was made from me. Sarah designed the stationery for her wedding at SS Great Britain and I had a pleasure to be her SS Great Britain wedding photographer too.

The nights entertainment included lovely and funny speeches, as well as a live  Ceilidh band, who traveled all the way from Scotland to provide the music.

After the couple had their dance, we took to the upper deck to take some photos, since the SS Great Britain never fails to look incredible in the evening. After that, it was back to the party to spend time with friends and family to celebrate the happiest day of their lives.

SS Great Britain wedding

I’m delighted to say that Sarah & Jon's SS Great Britain wedding has been featured  in Your Bristol & Somerset Wedding magazine.

The couple opted to wed on board the ss Great Britain due to their shared nautical interests - Jon is keen sailor and Sarah has ancestors who worked on the pilot cutter vessels in Pill near Bristol.

Sarah explains: "We love being by the sea so it was an easy choice for us. It also provided me with plenty of ideas for the wedding theme. As I am a graphic designer, I designed all the stationery items myself". "Also, all the profits from the wedding are reinvested into the upkeep of the ship in it as well," adds Jon.
Sarah's dad drove her to the ceremony in his lovingly restored 1953 Sunbeam Alpine Roadster. "Arriving at the ship in dad's car was amazing", she recalls. " There were lots of people waiting outside which helped set the scene".

The couple exchanged vows on the Promenade Deck surrounded by 90 of their friends and family. Sarah made her entrance to Pachebel and the exit music was Handel played by harpist, Claire Dibble.
The couple chose a live swing band Gary Grace for the evening and their first dance was Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darin.

They chose their photographer Martin Dabek because he had experience of shooting on board the ss Great Britain. "We were shown a portfolio of his work taken at a wedding on the ship, which was amazing. He's really creative and we were really keen on having reportage-style photography to capture people enjoying the day," says Jon. Sarah adds:" Martin and his assistant Simon were great on the day and they made sure we got the most out of the venue. They captured the spirit of the day beautifully and I would definitely recommend them"

What advice would you give brides who are planning their wedding?

1. Do what you both want to do – it’s a great reflection of your personalities and you don’t have to follow suit.
2. Relax. Take it all in and take a moment to look around you.
3. Plan. Fail to plan, plan to fail! He he… oh, and it will help with point 2.
