There are many reasons why I love to provide Thornbury Castle wedding photography. One of England’s most idyllic wedding venues, Thornbury Castle is the only Tudor castle in England that you can stay in as a hotel; it is the perfect location for luxurious fairytale weddings.
In this stunning 500-year-old castle you would get carried away by superb medieval architecture, a majestic Tudor hall, unique bedrooms, award-winning food service and romantic walled gardens.
The location makes Thornbury Castle an especially attractive venue as it is set in the South Gloucestershire countryside, within easy reach of the M4, and M5, and the centre of Bristol is just a 30-minute drive away.
Despite being almost in the centre of Thornbury, and right behind St. Mary’s Church, the castle is secluded and tucked away in its extensive private estate. With gorgeous landscaped grounds – vineyard and ancient walled kitchen garden – this is a place of great romance, infused with a sense of history. During its remarkable 500-year history, previous visitors to this magnificent castle include Queen Mary, Henry VIII and his new bride Anne Boleyn.
This impressive Grade I-listed Tudor castle boasts unique character inside and out. From the vineyard, where it produces its wine, to the tapestries, suits of armour and original fireplaces that await you inside. It is hard not to feel like a King or Queen!
One of the things I like as a Thornbury Castle wedding photographer is the 27 unique chambers where you and your guests become immersed in the spirit of the place. All of the chambers are regally decorated and finished to the highest standard. The most popular choice for brides getting ready is the Henry VII room, which is very spacious and has a very quirky bathroom. Did you know that Thornbury Castle has the biggest bed in England? It’s in The Tower room and it’s huge!
Thornbury Castle has many options for your wedding ceremony. The most popular choice for either ceremony or evening reception is The Tudor Hall. This space boasts exposed stonework walls decorated with imposing tapestries and old paintings.

For more intimate ceremonies, like elopement (which are very popular at Thornbury Castle) there are The Lounge and The Library. The latter boasts a magnificent and picturesque Oriel window, which overlooks the walled garden.
My favourite venue space to get married is an outdoor ceremony in the Tudor garden. This is truly a romantic option, imagine saying your vows surrounded by a perfectly kept, historic garden, with a majestic castle behind you! There are many options for Thornbury Castle wedding photography. In the picturesque Tudor garden, golden hour photos in the vineyards, or even the fields behind the castle – not to mention the impressive arch gate!
You will be spoilt for choice…and there are plenty of amazing indoor shots you can take too. Thornbury Castle looks especially interesting at night, as it is lit very thoughtfully to show off the most impressive parts of the castle.
So if you’re looking for an enchanted and romantic castle for your wedding venue, Thornbury Castle will tick all the boxes. And if you’re looking for an experienced and recommended Thornbury Castle wedding photographer, get in touch, I’d love to hear about your wedding plans.
